9. Regeneration of Green Spaces in Tarnów

Tarnów is struggling with fragmented urban greenery, a lack of planting consistency, and insufficient environmental awareness among its residents. Each year, the city office receives over 300 requests for new plantings and the revitalisation of green spaces, with district councils regularly calling for improvements to the quality of recreational areas. Furthermore, there is a shortage of spaces that encourage children and young people to engage with nature and learn through experiential environmental education.

This action aims to streamline urban greenery management while fostering biodiversity and environmental learning. Key activities involve professional tree surveys and vitality audits to manage diseased flora and strategic reforestation. By optimizing plant growth conditions, the project will strengthen the city’s climate resilience and air filtration. Furthermore, major revitalisation efforts will be targeted at Piaskówka Park and the E. Kwiatkowski Municipal Park.

Piaskówka Park, covering 20 hectares, has required modernisation for years. Planned activities for the park include educational trails with learning stations, outdoor competitions, and ecological workshops, as well as a dedicated open-air classroom for nature lessons—with a strong emphasis on nature conservation and sustainable development. Implementing water retention solutions, such as the revitalisation of the park pond, will improve the local microclimate and support drought mitigation efforts.

The Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski Municipal Park will undergo modernisation focusing on its pathways, greenery, and small architectural elements. The park’s rich biodiversity will serve as a hub for ecological education and social integration. Additionally, the project includes student workshops aimed at developing innovative concepts for the management and development of green spaces across the city.

Well-planned urban greenery mitigates the negative effects of urbanisation by lowering temperatures, improving air quality, and increasing humidity. The protection and care of mature trees represent a vital investment in the future, as their restoration takes decades. This project will enhance the aesthetics of Tarnów, improve the accessibility of recreational areas, and strengthen the sense of community, ultimately building a more sustainable and eco-friendly city.

The total value of this action is 6,158,000.00 PLN, all of which is covered by grant funding.
